The Annoying Gila Woodpecker

Woody Woodpecker is annoying and I didn’t fully realize until I moved here. Here is a female Gila Woodpecker (the males have a red spot on their head) making a lot of noise and stealing sugar water from the hummingbirds. Funny how I don’t mind the Hooded Orioles sharing the hummingbird’s sugar water.

About 1:06 in you can hear a hummingbird looking for a place to drink. He ended up going below the camera shot to sip on the blooms on an Aloe Vera plant the folks in the apartment office got for me.

 

Meanwhile, the male Gila Woodpecker is slightly less annoying and he has a cool red spot on top of his head.

The Gila Woodpecker is every bit as annoying as Woody!  They are noisy and not pretty like the Hooded Oriole.  Don’t they know that you can get away with more with great looks?  Apparently not.

Sometimes I’ll shoe (shew?) them away when they are stealing sugar water.  Even then, it’s an uphill battle.  They’ll be back.

Notice I don’t complain much about the Oriole being a theft.  We want him coming around with his striking looks and all.
